Kolsay lakes are one of the most beautiful places of Kazakh nature. They are also called the blue necklace of the Northern Tien Shan. It is understandable – such beauty is not found everywhere! Translated from Kazakh, "Kolsay" means " lake in the gorge”, because all three lakes are located in the most picturesque gorge of the Eastern part of the Kungei Alatau range, which is 300 km from Almaty.
The first lake is located at an altitude of 1800m above sea level. The deepest place in the first lake is 80 m. When the water surface is absolutely calm, the sky is reflected in it, and in the evening the lake seems to be bubbling with trout splashing in its waters!
Kaindy lake differs from others in its history and youth. By geological standards, Kainda is still a very young object. It was formed quite recently, at the beginning of the XX century. In 1911, the city of Verniy and its surroundings were shaken by a strong earthquake, and a tectonic collapse occurred in the Kaindy gorge. Simply put, on the river Kaindy, which flowed through the gorge of the same name, at one point formed a rather large dam. The water flooded part of the gorge, calmed down, and after some time on the site of a giant dam turned out to be a beautiful lake with a flooded forest inside.
